... President [J. Reuben] Clark is, in my judgment, in a class by himself, scholarly and wise in every place I have ever seen him. The thing which impressed me about his toast was the statement that civilizations could be known by their ballads, and he contrasted some of the strong ballads of our nation's early history with the crooning of Bing Crosby today. He closed by reading in very impressive manner the stirring ballad, 'Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Coming of the Lord.'
One cannot associate with the presiding brethren and catch a glimpse of their inspiration without knowing that the present civilization of the United States is honeycombed with seeds of its own destruction. Unless we get repentance, which is not likely, we shall suffer a national upheaval which will shake this nation to its center. We will certainly have to be cleansed and I am afraid with much suffering.
