The local papers run a series of articles stating that there is a law fixing a $1,000 fine on anyone caught circulating unauthorized bank bills. A month later, one of the same papers editorializes that the 1816 law that stipulated the penalty is obsolete. Nevertheless, the earlier articles discouraged people from trading with the Kirtland [Saftey Society] money.
