Brigham Young declares in the Deseret News, "Human flesh to be dealt in as property is not consistent or compatible with the principles of government." However less than a month later he twice argues in favor of a bill legalizing Black African slavery in the territory. He favored slavery of Blacks for religious reasons but did not want slave markets in Utah.
