[Spencer W. Kimball] Attended the Priesthood Meeting in our ward and the Sunday School. Here I tried again to meet a challenge. It was brought out in the class that Utah was 'behind in art and culture' and I resented it strongly. I pointed out that 'art' was not necessarily the combining of a few unfathomable slashes of color across a sheet'that true art was a beautiful home with tranquil family life and obedient and faithful children and calm and abundant living as well as color combinations. I asked what is the standard of art, and who sets the standards. The world set standards as to other things. To smoke, to drink, to be immoral is not wrong to the world. As Latter Day saints we do not pay attention too much to the standards set by the world, we follow the standards set by the Lord. I told them we were as a people following too much the world, apeing them too much and too much concerned with what the world thought were desirable standards of excellence. ...
We attended the meeting in the ward at 5 P.M. The PEN article was discussed. I defended our Cause with all I had.
