[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] I learned ... that an effort was being made to have the U.S. Senatorship offered to [apostle] Moses Thatcher. He had signed a request to Moses asking him to enter the race, but he had done so with the understanding that Moses would refuse to accept and that I approved of the proposition, reserving the right to withdraw his name. I assured him I was not favorable to any such a plan as it was not sincere, and I knew Moses could not get 32 votes if it was not understood that he would decline[.] I do not like political trades, especially when they are not sincere...
