[Apostle Heber J. Grant Diary] Saturday the 5th I met her on the street and handed her her letter and told her I would call for mine in the evening at 7 P.M. -- I called at 7 and had a long talk, something over an hour, with Emily. She confessed to liking me and said her only objection was entering plural marriage. Said she never expected to marry a man that she could respect as much as me. -- We had a long talk on old times when we were young and unmarried. I told her why I had left stopped keeping company with her and why I had done so without asking her to be my wife, that it was because I was directed so to do in answer to prayer. -- From what she said and from her letter I know that Emily loves me. I have loved her from a child and if my own feelings could be consulted she would be my wife. I have heard it said that a man can't love two women at the same time I know personally from my own experience that this is not true. My love for my wife is as strong as I think it possible for any man's to be. I prayed to be directed whether or not to ask Emily to marry me also that her answer might be in keeping with the will of our Heavenly Father, -- and I feel to acknowledge His hand in her refusal.
