[President Heber J. Grant Diary] I then called upon George F. Richards and had a long talk with him about appointing a patriarch. Brother Richards telephoned to me and asked if he could make an appointment to see me, and I told him that I would come and see him. I had a long talk with him and he is very anxious that I nominate someone to be the Patriarch of the Church. He feels that a mistake has been made in waiting ten long years since Brother Hyrum G. Smith died. I assured him that I had made up my mind to appoint some person to the position. He expressed his pleasure and assured me that whomever I named he would heartily support.
