[Heber J. Grant]
I spent many evenings until a late hour at Capt. [John] Codman's home. ... Upon one occasion he told me: 'I feel sure you are going to get statehood, Mr. Grant. I crossed the ocean coming home from my last European trip, with Frances Folsom. She was coming from Europe to marry Grover Cleveland.'| He said: '1/2She is one of the most beautiful talented ladies I have ever met'beautiful in face and form. We were joint editors of a manuscript paper on the steamer crossing the ocean. I told her of the Mormon people, how they were misunderstood, and that they are entitled to Statehood; and she promised me that if she had any influence with her husband she would see that Utah got statehood.'| He felt absolutely certain that no old bachelor who married such a beautiful, talented, and intelligent woman as Frances Folsom could refuse her anything. I never learned whether Frances had anything to do with our getting statehood but we did get it while Grover Cleveland was in the Presidential chair of the United States.
