[General] [Francis M. Lyman speaking:] In concluding his remarks he said that according to instruction received from the First Presidency, he and brother [George F.] Richards had called on the sons of the Patriarch John Smith and had conversed with them, but could not discover one they could consistently and conscientiously recommend as Presiding Patriarch to fill the vacancy caused by the death of their father. There was, however, a grandson of the late Patriarch, who is the oldest son of the oldest son of John Smith whom they had found to be clean and faithful. This was Hyrum Gibbs Smith, who is now presiding over the branch of the Church in Los Angeles [California], and he they could recommend.
