In a meeting of Apostles who discuss the recently released Manifesto of Wilford Woodruff Heber J. Grant says, "I approve of the Manifesto and feel that it is merely a public announcement of the course which we had already in our private councils decided to adopt and this being the case I do not know why we should not receive any possible benefits which may arise from a public declaration. Yet I believe greater trouble will follow the prominent Elders in the Church through the adoption of this policy. If this plan had been accepted in the beginning of this crusade the nation would not have been tried as it has been and would not be worthy of condemnation such as it now merits, hence I feel this has come at a proper time." Apostle Franklin D. Richards notes, "how the Lord had suspended the operations of His laws in various occasions & held the enemies of his Church responsible for the same." (1)

[William Clayton] This A.M. we have a perfect calm. The captain and some of the cabin passengers have been swimming and afterwards took a short voyage in a small boat. The weather is extremely hot to day almost to much for us to bear. Brother Samuel Bateman caught a young Shark during the calm near a yard long. The infant child belonging to Brother and Sister Green of Manchester died this evening and was buried in the deep. We have spent this P.M. in arranging for payment of potatoes. The whole cost is about £28 which amounts to 3/1 per head or adult persons. Elder Turley has from time to time spoken much concerning the sisters keeping themselves from the sailors. Sister Mary Ann Holmes from Herefordshire has made great freedom with them which has been a grief to us. This night Elizabeth Wilson, Elizabeth Lambert and Eliza Prince all from Manchester and Sister Crampton from Bolton was making very free with one of the mates and 2 of the cabin passengers. Brother Cope says th
ey were drinking wine with them. Elder Turley sent Sister Poole to request them to come [away] but they returned very indifferent answers and said they could take care of themselves. (1)

Wilford Woodruff writes in his diary: "arived at a point in the History of my life as the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints whare I am under the necessity of acting for the Temporal Salvation of the Church. The United State Governmet has taken a Stand & passed Laws to destroy the Latter day Saints upon the Subjet of poligamy or Patriarchal order of Marriage. And after Praying to the Lord & feeling inspired by his spirit I have issued . . . [a] Proclamation which is sustained by my Councillors and the 12 Apostles." The Church had been disincorporated and all its property in excess of $50,000 confiscated by the federal government; more than a thousand men had been sentenced to prison for unlawful cohabitation. In February the Supreme Court had upheld the Idaho law which disfranchised anyone unwilling to take an oath denouncing plural marriage. (1)

Journal of Wilford Woodruff; September 23, 1860.
. . . we repaired to the prayer room where we had a very interesting meeting. The subject of Orson Pratt came up again concerning his false doctrines. President Kimball wished him to make satisfaction to President Young. But President Young said he did not wish him to make any acknowledgement (sp. acknowledgment) to him. Brother Pratt was strangely constituted, he had acquired a great deal of knowledge upon many things but in other things he was one of the most ignorant men he ever saw in his life. He was full of integrity & would lie down & have his head cut off for me or his religion if necessary but he will never see his error until he goes into the spirit world. Then he will say, Brother Brigham, how foolish I was. Now Brother Pratt thinks that he and all the Gods will be learning for many millions of years but by & by will know all things & all will know it alike & that will be the end of their exaltations & knowledge. He cannot see the folly of forming this opinion he
re in the flesh & in his ignorance. But a thousand years hence he will see the folly of it. I will hold on to Brother Pratt and all those my Brethren of the Twelve notwithstanding all their sins, folly & weaknesses until I meet with them in my Fathers Kingdom, to part no more because they love God and are full of integrity. Brother Pratt said I do not believe as Brother Brigham & Brother Kimball do in some points of doctrine & they do not wish me to acknowledge to others that I do not believe. Brother Brigham said No, you cannot see the truth in this matter until you get into the spirit world. (1)

Joseph blesses to David Whitmer, John Whitmer, John Corrill, and William W. Phelps, with Oliver Cowdery recording. Oliver then prays for a blessing to give to Joseph and reports the heavens were opened to him. He writes "part of that which was shown and declared." Oliver gives Joseph a lengthy "patriarchal blessing." Not recorded until October 3, 1835. Included is the following: The records of past ages and generations, and the histories of ancient days shall he bring forth: even the record of the Nephites shall he again obtain, with all those hid up by Mormon, and others who were righteous, and any others, till he is overwhelmed with knowledge. No precious thing shall slumber from his possession, for he shall be covered with the most choice of all ages. till his soul shall be satisfied and his heart shall say, Enough, Enough! In his hands shall the Urim and Thummim remain and the holy ministry and the keys of the evangelical priesthood, also for an everlasting priesthood for
ever, even the patriarchal; for behold, he is the first patriarch in the last days. He shall sit in the great assembly and general council of patriarchs, and execute the will and commandment of God under the direction of the Ancient of Days; for he shall have his place and act in his station. (2)

William Clayton, on a ship carrying two hundred Mormons from England to America writes: "Good sail. At night Elder Turley spoke considerable on cleanliness and afterwards went round the births to see if all the company undressed. Some was found with their cloths on and some had never pulled their cloths off since they came on deck but had done their dirt in their cloths. Others had dirt in the corner of their birth. This made the most awful smell when discovered almost to much to bear. Elder Turley undressed and washed them and ordered the place cleaned out. [Some of the company] are filthy indeed." (3)

[Diary of Apostle John Henry Smith] Kanab
The High Council met at 8 a.m. The following decision was made.
Decision
In the matter of the Bishopric of the Kanab Ward against the Presidency of the Kanab Stake of Zion.
In the first Count we find the rules of the ward in regard to public dances should not have been applied to private parties; but the Presidency of the Stake should have given instructions for the correction of this matter to the Bishopric of the Ward.
The second Count pertains to an incorporate[d] water company whose business policy should be dictated by the stockholders, and while we do not approve of ecclesiastical interference in such matters, if any influence is used it should be for the promotion of union.
The third Count relating to the choice of an alternate High Councillor, needs no decision from us.
The fourth Count relates to the removal of the Kanab Bishopric by the Presidency of the Stake without a hearing before the High Council.
In this matter we find that it was a strained construction which enabled the Presidency to consider the letter of the Bishopric as a resignation, and their release was hasty and unwarranted.
Francis M. Lyman
John Henry Smith
John W. Taylor
Abraham H. Cannon
It was unanimously sustained by the High Council. We adjourned to meet at 7 p.m.
The conference convened in the stake academy building at 10 a.m. President Edwin D. Wooley, Bishops Graham McDonald and Esplin made reports and Francis M. Lyman took up the ballance of the time explaining to the people their condition and calling for repentance from certain brethren who had made some very harsh remarks about the bishop.
At the afternoon meeting Bro. Thomas Chamberlain and John Rider made reports and Elders J. W. Taylor and Abraham H. Cannon preached the gospel. A splendid spirit prevailed during the day.
The High Council and Priesthood of the Stake met at 7 p.m. the brethren nominated a number of men from whom the apostles selected by the aid of those present the bishop and Council. Bishop L. C. Mariger having resigned in the morning at the High Council meeting this action was found necessary. Joel H. Johnson was chosen for Bishop, Alfred Young for first Councillor and Asa W. Judd for second Councillor. All were unanimously sustained. (2)

On his 19th birthday Orson Pratt is baptized into the Mormon Church by his brother Parley. He becomes one of the first apostles, almost commits suicide after finding that Joseph Smith had propositioned his wife, is excommunicated, rebaptized, fulfills 11 missions for the church. He teaches himself mathematics, physics and astronomy and publishes textbooks on advanced algebra. He differs in doctrinal matters with president Brigham Young and is threatened with disciplinary action over it but Pratt's views are later adopted by the Church while Young's are labeled as "heresy." Before he dies in 1881 Orson Pratt had been a Mormon longer than any other person. (2)

In san Francisco, pro-Mormon Republicans (including "permanent" national chair of Republican Party's national convention) tell presidents Woodruff and Cannon that LDS church's only hope is to make "some announcement concerning polygamy and the laying of it aside." Republican leaders then promise to promote Utah's statehood in expectation that church will work to have majority of Mormons vote Republican. (2)

[Danites] Apostle Orson Hyde contended that Hickman (who had been stealing from Camp Floyd soldiers) probably "had a revelation to act as he did." This lawless period should have ended with the official announcement by Brigham Young on 9 September 1860, that said, "...if the Lord wants any stealing done he would reveal it to me as soon as to Bill Hickman or others." [First Vision] "being wrought up in my mind, respecting the subject of religion and looking at the different systems taught the children of men, I knew not who was right or who was wrong and I considered it of the first importance that I should be right, in matters that involve eternal consequ[e]nces; being thus perplexed in mind I retired to the silent grove and bow[e]d down before the Lord ... I called upon the Lord for the first time, in the place above stated or in other words I made a fruitless attempt to p[r]ay ... I called on the Lord in mightly prayer, a pillar of fire appeared above my head, it presently rested down upon me, and filled me with Joy unspeakable, a personage appeard in the midst of this pillar of flame which was spread all around, and yet nothing consumed, another personage soon appeard like unto the first, he said unto me thy sins are forgiven thee, he testified unto me that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; <and I saw many angels in this vision> I was a

Apostle (and U.S. Senator) Reed Smoot proposes to Apostles that "all new cases [of polygamy] should be excommunicated from the church and that action should be taken at once. Also that the church should not retain any man taking a plural wife after the Manifesto in a church position where people were asked to support him" The Apostles refer to this as "wholesale slaughter" and recommend a quieter approach. [David O McKay] [at meeting of the Presidency and Apostles in the temple:] Remarks by President J. Reuben Clark, Jr. "I think that the minutes of this meeting ought to carry our message of love, trust and confidence in the President of the Church on this, his natal day, that we love, we trust him, we believe the Spirit of the Lord is with him, and that the warmest prayers we have in our hearts are that his life may be preserved in years as long as they are happy to him. When I wished him well this morning, I wished him many happy returns of happy years. He has been a great inspiration to us and the people. He has been a great leader. He enjoys the confidence of the people. We rejoice in that confidence. There is nothing that is good that we do not wish and pray will be bestowed upon him by our Heavenly Father, that He will continue in the future as in the past to give him His inspiration, His wisdom, and the revelations of His messages of love and appreciation and conf
idence to you, and made these prayers in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Even so, Amen." Following President Clark's spiritual message, I said that I wanted to take this opportunity to express to them, my beloved brethren, the deep love that I have in my heart, and gratitude for their loyalty and for the unity of spirit that pervades the Council. I told them that I wished to express appreciation to my two counselors--loyal, faithful, true servants of the Lord; that I appreciate their support; I appreciate their wisdom and what they do for this Church and the Presidency as members of the First Presidency of the Church--President Clark for his wisdom, his willingness to do things which sometimes cause him physical inconvenience; President Moyle for his willingness to work night and day, and their united support as expressed at this meeting so beautifully by President Clark and the Brethren, by President Joseph Fielding Smith and all the members of the Twelve, for the fee
ling of brotherhood mentioned in the opening prayer and the prayer at the altar. (2)

Brigham Young's office journal records: "The President observed he was prejudiced against many of the Elders who had labored in England their course had been oppresive to the people for the sake of living like gentlemen, coming home in carriages, and bringing [or buying] home Merchandize to trade with; he should enquire of other Elders into particulars, and do all he could to stop this system of begging from the Saints. The President alluded to his former travels in England and how little he had done upon. H. C. Kimball alluded to the little he had ever received from the Saints." (1)

[Heber J. Grant diary] Took the Special Union Pacific Train at 7:18 carrying Delegates from Utah County to the Convention at Ogden. I left the train at Salt Lake, although I should have been pleased to have gone on Ogden to attend the convention. Several of the Delegates on the train assured me that I could have the nomination for Governor if I would accept it. The Utah Co. Delegates were solid for me. At Salt Lake I learned that all I needed to do was to say the word and I could have the nomination. I highly appreciate the compliment, and feel reasonably well assured that I could get the nomination were I to enter the fight, but I feel that it would be an unwise thing in view of the Church position which I hold. I called on Emily this AM and she was very much frightened for fear I was going to accept the nomination. I called at the office of the First Presidency and told them that I had been offered the nomination by a great many of the Delegates and that I had assured them
that I would not accept. I intimated that I would do so if they desired it, and inasmuch as they said nothing to indicate that they would pleased to have me accept the nomination I wired to my cousin A. W. Ivins to use his influence to see that my name did not come before the convention, I did not care to have a few votes cast for me seeing that I did not want and would not accept the offer of the nomination Had a pleasant visit with Heber M. Wells and assured him that I was delighted that he secured the nomination from the Republicans for Governor as it would have hurt very much indeed to have had Crane secure it. I told him I hoped we could make some arrangements for him to remain with the Bank in case he were elected. Spent the evening at Emily's. Sate this evening received word that John T. Caine had been named as the Democratic man for Governor. Emily and I went up to her brother's home and informed him of the fact. Heber assured me this afternoon that he hoped brother
Caine would be nominated as he would sooner run against him than some one who was not in politics. I am inclined to think Wells will be elected, but think it would be better for him personally if he were defeated. (2)

Journal of Wilford Woodruff; September 4, 1860.
Brother Cannon said there was a learned Doctor that wanted to be baptized. . . . He (the doctor) is satisfied that the doctrine of the plurality of God and that Adam is our Father is a true doctrine revealed from God to Joseph & Brigham. For this same doctrine is taught in some of the old Jewish records which have never been in print and I know Joseph Smith nor Brigham Young have had access to, and the Lord has revealed this doctrine unto them or they could not have taught it. President Young said if all that God had revealed was in fine print it would more than fill this room but very little is written or printed which the Lord has revealed.

A month after race riots in the Watts suburb of Los Angeles, Reed Benson, Utah John Birch Society coordinator and son of Apostle Ezra Taft Benson, writes to Birch Society Members in Utah: "It is common knowledge that the Civil Rights Movement is Communist controlled, influenced and dominated. . . . Our founder and guide, Mr. Robert Welch, has instructed us that when necessary we must adopt the communist technique in our ever present battle against Godless Communism. It is urged that in the coming weeks the Utah Chapters begin a whispering campaign and foster rumors that the Civil Rights groups are going to organize demonstrations in Salt Lake City in connection with the forthcoming LDS conference. . . . A few well placed comments will soon mushroom out of control and before the conference begins there will be such a feeling of unrest and distrust that the populace will hardly know who to believe. The news media will play it to the very hilt. No matter what the Civil Rights le
aders may try to say to deny it the seed will have been sown and again the Civil Rights movement will suffer a telling blow." (3)
